What’s Preakness Without Toilet Running?
It’s been years since I attended the Preakness infield. Twice in my early-mid twenties was enough for me. But I do enjoy the video highlights of the crazyness. Here are two classics.
This year Preakness officials decided to prohibit attendees from bringing in outside beverages. This new restriction will certainly change the dynamics of the party. For better or for worse. Part of the tradition in years past involved coming up with creative ways to drag in as much alcohol as humanly possible. Oversized coolers, trash cans, and kiddie pools were crowd favorites.
Recent traditions like running the portable toilets probably won’t happen this year. Long standing traditions – flashing, fighting, passing out, etc. – may or may not happen. Cutting outside alcohol will probably reduce the overall crowd size, but organizers will make up for it by selling enough pricey beers and other beverages.

everyone i have talked said they think the ban is a bad idea…but then again those are also the same people who said they went once or twice in their early/mid twenties and haven’t been back since. my theory is this new rule will bring back that demographic. Seriously $3.50 for a 16oz beer isn’t a big deal.
I know a lot of people that are boycotting the Preakness this year due to the new rules banning outside beverages. Those that couldn’t bear to witness foolish debauchery could have spent an extra 40 bucks to sit in the stands anyway. As far as the idiots that are run across the port-o-potties, they were just asking for people to pelt them with beer cans. I have a feeling that Magna will lose more in revenue from lost ticket sales than they gain from selling beer inside. They could have even spent more on security to limit their liability and still come out ahead…but we shall see.
