Baltimore Waterfront Promenade - Bike Tour

Grabbed this from the MD Daily Record article about the Promenade being nearly complete.  Although on a bike I guess you would have to walk 1/3 of the way - through Harborplace.

I’d very much like to ask Nate Evans, the Baltimore City Bike and Pedestrian Planner featured in the video, if there is any plan by the city to remove the NO BICYCLING signs on the prominade from the Korean War Memorial to Henderson’s Wharf, or are we to presume that we will not recieve a citation from the police if we choose to ignore the signs, as he and the other cyclists did in this video?

I’d like to actually ask him, in the form of an email. Unfortunately, I cannot find one for him. If anybody would have better luck than I, please post his email below.

    what the hell was that?
    that is/was no promenade.
it was edited in a fashion that could only really fool someone from another town.

where does this promenade go when it hits harborview? they cant honestly believe that they ended at domino’s or that it went “past harborview” because it ended at the point inside the chain-link fence in harborview right next to the dumpster that the city uses for the trash and dead fish that the garbage-scow pulls out of the harbor.

its behind a fence patrolled by security guards. behind the gate at the end of webster street (near little havana) that is always locked. where does your promenade go from there? it backtracks out of neccesity. there is no attraction at the end. you cant even get to little havana. which is inches away because of harborview’s fence.

the edit went from the nice new bridge behind the ritz and skipped all of key highway spanning the actual ritz and the harborview pier homes and then ignored the bulk of harborview itself. a property, i might add, where the security guards will hound you.

i remain unconvinced that baltimore will ever accomplish this mission. that video was a farce.

Biking is illegal on the promenade. I think the city made it legal from 7-9am for commuters. (I guess they have to walk home.) I have biked on it and it is unpleasant because you feel at any corner you could hit a pedestrian. The city needs to explain the rules clearly, if their lawyers allow them. My suggestion is ride on side streets to downtown from Southeast: Fait Ave, Essex St, Collington Ave, Bank Street, etc…

I ride my bike all the time down there…I just ride up on the other side of Rash field, then around the back of the Science Center in that “lane” where the horse drawn carriages are. You can basically ride your bike in the prominade up until the Science Center before the police hastle you.

I basically go the exact opposite of where they are starting. I go from LP to Bo Brooks and back….and it is a nice ride.

clebo99, that is all and good and when I ride on the waterfront I use a similar route. My issue is that the “Baltimore City Bike and Pedestrian Planner” is seemingly promoting a cycling route that is very much illegal. One that is posted as being illegal and one that will cause the cyclist, at the very least, to be chased down by the Baltimore cycling police and chastised and instructed to get the bicycle onto the street. Will very likely cause the cyclist to receive a citation, as the harbor cycling police strictly enforce “no cycling on brick” (as the cyclists in the video are doing).

As far as the Baltimore Police Department is concerned, there is absolutely no bicycling allowed after 9 am:

In front of the Korean War Memorial.

On the promenade between the Korean War Memorial and Henderson’s Wharf.

On the promenade from Pier 5 all the way around the inner harbor past the Maryland Science Center in front of Federal Hill

    and…

in front of the Ritz to Harborview.

that is approximately 90% of the Promenade.

… and yet, the city is promoting the Promenade as a venue for cycling. What gives? Obviously, the different city departments need to coordinate their policies.

    EEB,

Really? You can’t bike in between the Ritz and Harborview? Is that entire route open yet (I know it was partially open but closed near The Rusty Scupper).

I have been hastled by the police near the inner harbor for riding but not in the other places you’ve mentioned.

I agree, let’s get the people on the same page so we can enjoy some great biking in the city.
