Target and Harris Teeter to Open in Canton

Published by Glen at 9:49 am under Canton

From today’s Baltimore Sun. This sounds like a great project. A Target in the city would be a huge success, but I’m surprised Harris Teeter would open a second location within a few miles of their future location in Locust Point.

The Main Street-style shopping center planned for a former oil refinery site in the Canton Crossing mixed-use development - likely to be anchored by Target and grocer Harris Teeter - will include two large waterfront pavilions for shops and offices.

Developers of the proposed The District at Canton Crossing presented the idea for the pavilions along with their conceptual site plan yesterday to a Baltimore design panel in a first step toward winning city approval for the 570,000-square-foot center.

The Article says Target and Harris Teeter to Open in Canton, yet the article says, “Brian Gibbons, president and chief executive officer of Greenberg Gibbons, said his company is continuing negotiations with the two anchors. Neither retailer would comment on the project yesterday because leases have not yet been signed”. This means what? Harris Teeter signed a Lease for McHenry Row for 2010, which like 18months away. Why on earth would a company sign two leases approx. 2 miles apart for the same city when they have not even seen how the first store does. It took 2 years to get Harris Teeter to commit to McHenry Row in Locust Point. I was excited about the Harris Teeter being so close to my house until I heard it would not be open until 2010. That pretty much means Canton residents should be shopping at their Harris Teeter by 2015. I wouldn’t get your hopes up just yet.
