“Riptide by the Bay” Answer to Fells Point Quandary

Published by Jeff at 10:12 pm under Fells Point

Today I came across a quandary that I’ve often heard others speak about.? I was spending the day with my family around the harbor including my younger niece and nephew.? I wanted a good place to eat dinner, maybe some seafood, but didn’t want to go somewhere too touristy (that ruled out the inner harbor), nor somewhere too fancy (after all we were with the kids), nor somewhere too pubby (kids again).? The “no fancy” and “no pubby” pretty much ruled out most of the places in fells point.?

Thankfully, there was “Riptide by the Bay” which opened up just three weeks ago on Thames St.? Riptide has a small bar in front with tables in the back and a little bit of outside dining.? Clean and comfortable it was still casual and not too expensive.? Even though they’re working a few of the kinks out, the food was great!? Dishes range from burgers to crabcakes and fish.? They have been on a limited menu for the opening, but are rolling out the entire menu this week.?

For those of you facing that question - Where can I take my family and friends in Fells Point that is casual and reasonable but with good food? and Baltimore feel?? I would definitely recommend Riptide.? ? (1718 Thames St., 410-732-3474).

Disagree about the food. We went there last night on your recommendation. The service was great and the place seemed nice enough, but the food was medicore at best. The mussels app was very good but the crabcakes were nothing to right home about. Honestly not sure there is any reason to head back there.

jeff, what? do you own the place?
    seems like insider trading

haha…I assure you I have no connection to the place. The crabcake recipie sounds like it might one of the kinks they need to work out. Incidentally, they also told me they would start serving hard crabs soon. They assured me that they would only serve local Maryland caught crab. Keep posting your opinions!

    jeff,
what is the argument for selling only maryland crabs? is it that we are supporting our watermen? i have no problem with that.
but is it to the detriment of the bay that anyone would do so?
all i read is about the declining number of crabs in the bay, surely that is not caused by marylanders eating crabs from north carolina or beyond.

Personally, I just think Maryland crabs taste better. I do support the state’s ban on the female harvest in the fall. Typically the female meat goes to packing houses and sent out of state anyway. Incidentally, early numbers from the crab harvest this year are way up. Whether that will continue through the summer is yet to be said. Here’s to a healthy and delicious crab population in the Chesapeake Bay!
