The real Baltimore is a much safer and more interesting place than the lopsided hellhole that’s relentlessly presented in the media.

Does it have crime and poverty? Absolutely — just like any other big city.

It also has a lot of good things going on, and a lot of reasons for optimism. Additionally, it has good food, cool music, interesting (if not always great) architecture, and people that are about as nice as anywhere else.

The safety advice I give here is exactly the same as in any big city: Don’t wander alone late at night, don’t leave valuables visible in your parked car, don’t flash money around in public, and generally use common sense.

I’ve lived in all sorts of places, from big cities to little rural towns. Not only do I feel safe living in Baltimore, but I love it here (and so do my neighbors).

I recommend Mt. Vernon as a good neighborhood. Charles Village and Bolton Hill are other nearby options.

Enjoy the city.

The area you are considering is fine and I wouldn’t be anymore concerned about crime than I would in any large city. It goes with the territory. But, I think you will find Baltimore to be much more pleasant than you are imagining it to be.

I lived in the St Paul & Chase Condos just South of UofB for the last nine years. This area is called Mt Vernon. Mt Veron is chock full of students from UofB, Peabody and MICA. This is a stable safe neighborhood. There area great places to eat and hang out. The Symphony, Opera house and Walters Art Museum are in the neighborhood. The Baltimore your family sees on the Wire are more and more isolated areas in East and West Baltimore. The important thing is to learn how to be a smart city dweller and you will have a great experience at UofB.

Baltimore has interesting history and great food.

Two murders around Johns Hopkins University I think was the incentive to build a huge new dormitory right across the street from the campus, as well as other nearby construction. For a serious answer to this question, ask the University of Baltimore. I got asked the same question by an anxious family of a soon-to-be freshman at Hopkins while waiting for a pizza at Papa John’s. That was when I ate pizza- now I worry about cholesterol.
