City Officials Announce Free Downtown Circulator

Published by Jeff at 11:16 pm under Public Transportation

Baltimore City plans to have a new free shuttle service serving the downtown area by next summer.? Perhaps the fact that it’s free will encourage more downtown residents to use public transportation and encourage tourists to visit other cultural attractions beyond the harbor.? While not a great solution to Baltimore’s public transit woes, at least it’s a start.?

It seems like every few months we hear a spiffy new public transport idea from the city. Whether it be trolley, water taxi, ski lift, or carrier pigeon. Why not connect and expand our existing public transit?? Expand the subway or improve the bus system. But hey - the Yellow cab has been pretty reliable the last couple times I called. Of course it now costs $25 to get from Locust Point to Canton.

The routes look good and it’s smart funding the service with Parking Authority money. However I think they will have a lot of difficultly running these buses during rush hours—the main problem with MTA buses in downtown. Without dedicated bus lanes in downtown, buses will continue to be stuck in traffic and never live up to their schedule or potential. I suggest bus lanes on Fayette/Baltimore for east/west and Calvert/St Paul for north/south and move as many bus lines to those lanes as possible.

This is a great first step, however, the fact that the city needs to take the lead on this is ridiculous. This is clearly the job of the MTA. Either the MTA should cede local control of their busses to Baltimore, or step up and actually help Maryland’s biggest city move.

To Glen, you can take the #1 bus to Pratt Street, and then the #11 bus to Canton. Total cost: $1.60

The fact that the money is coming from the Parking Authority is one of the best moves the city has ever made. Now if we could only get these streetcars back…
